Standard 6 - Candidate Professional Growth & Development
Candidates demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to engage in continuous learning, reflect on professional practice, and engage in appropriate field experiences.
6.1 Continuous Learning
Candidates demonstrate continual growth in knowledge and skills of current and emerging technologies and apply them to improve personal productivity and professional practice. (PSC 6.1/ISTE 6a, 6b)
In October, I had the opportunity to attend a Google Apps for Education Bootcamp for Level 2 Certification. In this workshop, our presenter introduced us to many exciting uses of Google Apps in the classroom. I enjoyed trying the apps differently than I had previously seen. I also enjoyed working in groups and moving around the room during the Bootcamp.
As a teacher it is important to remember that as long as you are teaching, you should also be learning. I am more understanding of my own students when I am learning something new or in a new way. Every teacher should strive to continually grow in knowledge and skills of current and emerging technologies. Fortunately for us, this workshop did just that. We were able to see different and new ways to use the apps that are often used very basically.
The ideas that I got and began to use from just this meeting really have improved my personal productivity and professional practice. For example, using a Google Doc for meeting notes with embedded assignments and links is genius! Even though it seems simple, it would be very beneficial to share this with all of my participants in my workshops or tech sessions. Then they also have a way to look back at the resources without having to navigate a webpage. Another idea I hope to use soon is using Google Forms to have students input daily questions, or bell ringer questions.
I learned that even though it can feel like you have a handle on this technology “stuff,” there is always something new around the corner. Next Google Apps training I attend, I intend to make a copy of the Google Doc meeting notes and write my own notes. It would have been so helpful to star the ideas that really interested me and write notes on how I could use it in my classroom.
This workshop impacted faculty development. From this Bootcamp, I can apply to test to be a Google Level 2 Certified Educator. Becoming a Google Certified Educator will help increase my knowledge of the Google Apps and can be beneficial for future instructional technology positions. This impact can be assessed by a survey of how the information supplied in the workshop has affected my classroom instruction.
6.2 Reflection
Candidates regularly evaluate and reflect on their professional practice and dispositions to improve and strengthen their ability to effectively model and facilitate technology-enhanced learning experiences. (PSC 6.2/ISTE 6c)
My Weebly portfolio blog is a compilation of reflections, opinions, and resources gathered while enrolled in the Instructional Technology Program at Kennesaw State University. In it, are many resources that I have researched and used in my classes with my 5th grade students. I have used many of my experiences noted to help struggling students and to excel higher achieving students.
The Weebly portfolio blog was a very helpful tool to regularly evaluate and reflect on the assignments, which caused me to reflect on my own professional practice and dispositions as well. Constantly learning things that could be used in my classroom helped me to be more creative and daring with new information. Instead of using things and technology the same way I had always learned, I now felt better about using it differently. For example, having students film their own review videos or collaborate on an assignment through technology was not something that I felt comfortable doing, but after trying it with my students I know I will be using it each year from now on.
From completing this artifact I have learned how to regularly assess what I have learned or done. I hope to use this skill often in the future. Regularly reflecting and keeping a record to refer back to, can help me grow as a teacher and form as a nice resource when needed. To improve the blog area of my Weebly page, I would like to reflect more often, especially if I notice something I have used and really liked, or the opposite.
The work that went into this artifact has impacted faculty development by allowing me to grow professionally. Even though the blog entries detail the workings of lessons, units, programs, applications that effect school improvement and student learning, the blog itself has been part of my professional development this past year and a half. To assess this impact, a survey could be used to gauge the number of resources reviewed and now used in the classroom. An observation could also be used to assess the impact of my Weebly blog.
6.3 Field Experiences
Candidates engage in appropriate field experiences to synthesize and apply the content and professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions identified in these standards. (PSC 6.3)
In this field experience, I was able to conduct a one hour workshop for my peers on a technology need in my school. First, I polled my teachers. Engage & Learn is a new program that our school system has adopted and was being suggested to use for benchmarks. As it is a new program, I received many requests for it to be a professional development workshop in our regular expo at the middle school.
The workshop allowed me to synthesize and apply the content and professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions learned during my graduate studies through Kennesaw State University. I have a tremendous array of resources in my educational quiver to share with teachers and schools. I understand the mentality of instructional technology coaches and how to best react to the position. Finally, I know how to help teachers work with technology to use it more effectively in their rooms.
From completing my workshop I’ve learned that having an online component is extremely helpful in guiding your instruction as well as a resource to relay to teachers, for them to look back on as needed. To improve the quality of this artifact, I think it could be helpful to also include a Frequently Asked Questions section for teachers to submit to. Many times questions get repeated, and it would be nice to have them in one place.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted faculty development. Teachers used my workshop as professional development. The impact can be assessed by the follow-up survey sent to teachers and by observing teachers using the program in their classrooms.
