As I have continued through the Instructional Technology Program at KSU, I have learned more about addressing the diverse needs of all students with technology. With technology we can bridge the gap of achievement by identifying the needs of diversified learners and using our knowledge to build a more comprehensive program of education. Using data and research to track diverse students’ achievement is essential for school improvement. After identifying who needs assistance or extra help, it is important to understand how to help.
English Language Learners can benefit from vocabulary, concept maps, and more one-on-one instruction or discussion. By allowing them time to verbalize and make connections visually, ELL students will have a more concrete knowledge of the content. Students with special needs can benefit from assistive technology at times. Evaluating a student with special needs student to assess whether an assistive technology device would be useful is needed first. Next, teaching the student and teachers to use the device will ensure that it is used properly. Students from economically disadvantaged homes will benefit from equal access to technology as their peers. At times, it may be necessary to conduct a mini lesson on basic operations if there are students who do not have much experience with computers, Chromebooks, or technology in general.
Teacher play a tremendous part in helping diverse students succeed in the classroom. Their attitudes, habits, and classroom environment can determine whether a student feels accepted in his or her classroom. A teacher’s attitude should be one of grace and helping. Allowing a student try, make mistakes, and try again is a way for students to learn. Lending a helping hand or encouraging students to help one another is also a way to promote a positive classroom environment. Teachers should be willing to learn and try new methods of teaching. Some students may learn differently than the teacher has done for the past 10 years. It is important to remember that teacher’s ultimate goal is to help students succeed.
*Researching past state assessment scores of students with disabilities and students with economic disadvantages for school improvement
*Providing professional development on how to differentiate instruction with Google Classroom and Google Docs
*Identifying the needs of students who have limited prior computer experience and creating a lesson in basic operations of a computer to address those needs
*Providing technology training for parents to understand what students do and use in the classroom
*Identifying the use of collaboration to address cultural differences
*Modeling the use of technology for higher order thinking skills by allowing students to research and create
