When your students have learned the content for the unit, how do you know? Do you assess them? Of course! The real question is how you assess them. There are a variety of methods to assess student knowledge, from paper and pencil tests to activities involving movement and student creativity. Also on the spectrum are online assessments and online activities for students to demonstrate depth of knowledge and practice skills.
Two online tools that make a difference and you should know about are: Wordle and MangaHigh. Wordle is a visual representation of text. Here, you paste in any text information and make a "picture" with the words it contains. The more often the word appears in the text the larger it appears in your picture. These are usually your most important ideas. Here is an example I made using our 5th grade math standards overview:

MangaHigh is an interactive math website that allows students to work on what their struggling with independently. Here, you can assign topics to students and allow them to learn from the games and interactive lessons. My students really enjoy "playing" on MangaHigh. I really like that you can easily see what students are working on, how many times they've attempted an area, and if they need more help on anything. Check it out!
So when you're done teaching and they've learned the information, then what? Something I have incorporated this year in my classroom is a good working relationship with Google Forms. My students do everything from weekly quizzes to quick formative assessments with it. My absolute favorite part of Google Forms, is that it can grade for you! When working with Google Apps, you'll quickly learn that there are "add-ons" for almost all of your needs. In Forms, the grading add-on is called Flubaroo. Here you can pick an answer key and grade your assessments in no time.
